Determining the Effectiveness of Self-Instruction as an Educational Method to Impact Volunteer Firefighter Health and Safety
Overview
This project focused on determining the effectiveness of self-instruction as an educational methodology in promoting firefighter safety and health policies and practices within the volunteer fire service. Can self study increase knowledge and change attitudes related to volunteer firefighters and their volunteer fire department?
The research design involved pre- and post surveys, with both treatment and control groups, using volunteer firefighters from five states. The survey focused on issues of firefighter safety, from both a department policy standpoint, as well as, specific individual safety behaviors.
The IFSTA Fire Department Safety Officer, First Edition, and Fire Department Safety Officer Study Guide were important elements of this research project.
