An Early Childhood Education Curriculum
Overview
Funded in part through the DHS, U.S. Fire Administration, Fire Prevention and Safety Assistance to Firefighters Grant program, this developmentally appropriate classroom curriculum is delivered primarily by early childhood educators with key assistance from the local fire department and parents. This curriculum has proven to be not only successful in Oklahoma, but has been distributed to many states across our nation. The project was a collaboration of Fire Protection Publications and the Center for Early Childhood Teaching and Learning, College of Human Environmental Sciences, both at Oklahoma State University.
Based on four years of research addressing principals of child development and early childhood education best practices, this comprehensive curriculum links the 8 nationally recognized fire safety messages for young children to the latest research for developmentally appropriate educational methods. Fire safety messages have been modified and presented in a deliberate sequence based on how young children develop, learn and understand.
Specifically designed for children 4 and 5 years old, this curriculum can easily be modified to be used with children in first and second grade also.
A series of formative and summative evaluations, and critical reviews were completed by early childhood, Pre-K, and Kindergarten educators in the classroom. These evaluations validated the effectiveness of the curriculum and its ease of use.
