Overview
SAFEOKLAHOMA is a smoke alarm installation and education project for people in rural areas with low population density. Three high risk counties in Oklahoma were identified for this project. The project was funded by a 2008 Fire Prevention and Safety, Assistance to Firefighters Grant in partnership with the Oklahoma Fire Chiefs Association / Oklahoma State Firefighters Association.
Local installer teams were identified and trained to install state of the art smoke alarm equipment in the homes of the local residents and provided customized home fire safety educational messages. After 20 installations the first documented “save” was reported. Currently there have been 5 reported saves.
The customized home fire safety educational messages are available for download in PDF, including one that has been translated into Spanish.
