Jonathan Lund

Jonathan Lund is the Fire Marshal for the Des Moines Fire Department. Prior to his promotion to Fire Marshal in June of 2013 he served as the department’s first Fire Protection Engineer. He is a graduate of Oklahoma State University (BS in Fire Protection Engineering & Safety Technology) and Drake University (Masters of Public Administration). Additionally, Jonathan is an Executive Fire Officer, Certified Public Manager, Licensed Professional Engineer (Iowa & Texas - Fire Protection) and graduate of the International Association of Fire Chief’s (IAFC) Executive Development Institute. He has previously served as the President of the Hawkeye State Fire Safety Association and the Iowa Fire Marshals Association. Jonathan currently chairs the Fire & Life Safety sub-group for the International Code Council’s (ICC) Performance Code, and is a member of the SFPE’s Existing Building task group, he represents the Missouri Valley Division of the IAFC on ICC’s Fire Service Membership Council and is the past Chair of the Executive Committee for the Central Iowa Code Consortium. He has previously served on multiple validation committees including Fire & Emergency Services Company Officer; Structural Fire Fighting: Initial Response Strategy and Tactics; Fire Inspection and Code Enforcement; Facility Fire Brigades; & Fire Protection, Detection, and Suppression Systems.

In addition to the Des Moines Fire Department, Jonathan was employed by the Norwalk Fire Department as a Captain/EMT for 12 years and has previously worked for the Madison (WI) and North Shore (WI) fire departments. Jonathan and his wife, Anna, own Lund Fire Protection, a fire protection engineering firm that assists municipalities with building and fire protection system plan reviews. Jonathan has presented on numerous topics related to fire station construction, fire protection systems, and fire prevention. His research work has been published on numerous topics including pressure regulating devices, company fire inspection programs, promotional processes, and student behavior during fire drills. His research led to a collaborative effort with the Des Moines Public Schools to implement the Fire Drills as a Learning Experience program. Jonathan, his wife, Anna, and their daughter, Sophie, reside in Norwalk, IA.

Jonathan was first elected to the IFSTA Executive Board in 2022.
